The Montessori curriculum for our toddler program is based on the idea that children have a natural curiosity and desire for independence and exploration. The curriculum is designed to help children develop in four areas: cognitive, language, social-emotional, and physical. The curriculum is based on daily observations and the introduction of new activities and materials to stimulate learning. Some learning objectives include language development, independence/concentration, social skills, practical life lessons, visual discrimination, physical coordination, and potty training.
Here are some ways that Montessori programs for toddlers may help children learn:
Language development Children are exposed to creative linguistic concepts through conversations, stories, songs, and poems. Teachers also encourage children to express their needs and wants with words.
Independence Children are encouraged to do things for themselves throughout the day, such as using a self-care area to learn how to wash their hands and wipe their nose.
Social skills Children are given opportunities to learn about sharing, taking turns, and being patient through social interactions in the classroom. Teachers will also model grace, courtesy, and caring for others.
Practical life skills Children learn how to serve themselves snacks, pour drinks, put on their clothes, and clean up spills. They will also participate in activities that help them care for the environment, such as watering plants or washing dishes.
Pride in accomplishments Teachers will acknowledge the children's efforts instead of just praising the end result. This can help your child learn to take pride in their work and the process and to seek out challenges more often.
